Robyn Unwin

Robyn Unwin has always had a reporter’s nose for ’the story’ and is in her wheelhouse helping people get to the truth of their message and express themselves authentically on stage and on camera.  With her background in broadcast journalism, she has a passion for documentaries – particularly stories of humanity, resilience, and leadership – and wants to add to the conversations that inspire social progress and transformation.  She is a life-long student of yoga and mixed media art.

What do you BELIEVE in?  It might sound naive with all that’s going on in the world, but I really believe in the goodness of the human spirit.  I truly believe that one day we’ll all find a way to love each other, and I know I’m called to document the goodness of humanity in film.  I believe we all play our own individual part by bringing the best of ourselves to work we love, being creative more than consumptive, showing kindness to each other and laughing wherever we can.

How does LOVE show up/present itself in your life? It shows up the most with my husband, who is the funniest guy I know, with my dog, who I take with me everywhere I can, and my family and friends.  It shows up in all the interactions of my day, in my work, and by appreciating people and their uniqueness – and I’ll bet not everyone always experiences my unending curiosity as love, but it is : ),

Who or what INSPIREs you? I think that goes to my mom, who was one of the classiest, smartest, and most compassionate women I’ve ever known – I’ll always be inspired by the grace she showed while she died of cancer.  That was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen.  I’m particularly inspired by resilience.

How do you, or can you, SERVE your community? Right now I’m shooting a web documentary series profiling women – some from our own community – who are making a significant difference in the world by truly living their purpose.  I think sharing their stories will serve and inspire our community, especially women who feel pulled to express their creativity and know their purpose.  There are women who have a roadmap of how they did it, so I want to share those stories.  I’ve also had the opportunity to mentor young filmmakers and speakers and serve on the board of Cinevic, my favourite film co-op, but I think service is to really care about people on a day to day basis.  It’s to show kindness everywhere – in the grocery line, at work, with people less fortunate, and with people whose viewpoints challenge me to stay open-hearted – that’s where an attitude of service matters most.

What does it mean to you to SURRENDER?  Good question… It used to mean ‘giving up’- like ‘I can’t do this anymore’, or admitting defeat….  Now I see it more as a way to tap into my intuition – if I ‘surrender’ my point of view or what I think to be true about something, I’m open to a whole new way of seeing or experiencing it. The irony is that what I used to experience as weakness is actually my super-power.
